Universe Update v3.0

Bursts of celebration is coming from the worlds.

Rejoice, the void is diminishing! The Crystal Consortium’s breakthrough projectile displacement technology is now adapted to void blocks, neutralizing them into null-matter and displacing them into dark space. To celebrate this momentous event, tournaments are held around many worlds, inviting all expert commanders to test their fleets’ configuration, firepower, and agility against each other. A new interstellar communication system, named the MGB Universe Network, capable of near-instant transmission of information across any world, is now active. Prove your skills in the tournament and your accomplishments will reverberate across the known universe.

Commander Profile and Live Services

Each commander will now have an ID card (public profile) on the Universe Network showcasing their fleet, medals, and other accomplishments. You can customize your name and custom ship image from the profile menu.

Google Play Games (GPG) is now integrated into MGB. By signing in to GPG, your MGB account will be created automatically, and you will have access to all live services in MGB. This includes Cloud Save, which works exactly the same as Local Save, except your game progress is saved online and you can easily restore your progress on other devices using your GPG account. Cloud Save also works if your device is offline, and will synchronize your save data with the server the next time you come online.

In a future update, we will implement cross platform support (starting with iOS) by allowing you to link your MGB account to various credentials.

World Tournament

It’s time to dust off your starter ships and participate in the sport of asteroid deconstruction at World Tournaments hosted around the universe. Earn yourself a place in the Universe Leaderboards as the top Miner Gun Builder commander of the season.

In this first ever tournament season, you can find world tournaments at YS (yellow squares) worlds within areas indicated by the blue circles. Instantly jump to one of these areas via the Go To X button, provided you have already reached a high enough tier.

A world tournament has a set of one to three World KPIs (key performance indicators) which you need to fulfill when you finish the map. These includes: scoring the highest DPS, earning the most money, fastest time to finish a map, or used the least items in the ship… When you pass or clear the map in the tournament, map stats relevant to the KPIs are automatically submitted to the tournament for the ship you used. New submissions will replace the old ones if you replay the map. Subsequently, you will be ranked against other commanders.

To make things more interesting, each world has a number of ships and items that are banned from use in the tournament. That means you have to get creative in building your ship to fulfill the KPIs in the world. When you select a world tournament, the Build menu will indicate banned ships and items with a white X over them. If you fly with a banned ship/loadout, your map stats will not be submitted.

When you finish a map, your newest map stats for the current ship is shown on the bottom bar. If there is a previous stats record for the same ship, the stats values will be shown in green, red, or white, indicating a better, worse or unchanged value, respectively.

Everytime you submit new map stats, you need to be scored again before you can see the tournament points (TP) you earn. A timer (bottom right corner) will indicate the next scoring session, where all commander’s map stats are ranked for each ship, for all worlds. After scoring is done, you will be able to see your place in the world leaderboards, and the TP you earned for each participating ship. Note that you need to wait for a scoring event to complete before your ship stats are visible in the world leaderboards. See Figure 2 and 3 for more info.

The number of tournament points you receive for a participating ship is determined by the number of players participating in the world, the number of players using that ship, and your rank (by map stats KPI). The formula is:

points = s – rank + 1, if s <= pMax
points = pMax * (1 – (rank + 1) / s), if s > pMax
where,
s is the number of players participating in a ship
w is the number of players participating in a world
pMax is the maximum earnable points for a world
pMax = linear interp. from 100 to 500 based on [w / 10000]

Tournament points you earn in each world are not automatically credited to you. You have to first lock-in the points you scored gain them permanently. You can do that by clicking the lock-in button at the top of the world map. Locking in your points is irreversible, and you can no longer participate in the tournament in that world, and your ships will not be scored anymore. This will stay in effect until the Universe Tournament ends. You can see the maximum earnable TP per ship and the % of players who have already locked in their points.

Once you have locked-in your points, you will be able to see your current TP in the top right corner. BETA: You will be able to spend them in the future.

In the Universe Leaderboards (Profile button > leaderboard tab), you can see your ranking relative to other players, as well as the top players. You can sort by either TPs or Tiers by tapping on the column title. You will only be visible in the Universe Leaderboards if you have at least 1 TP.

It shows the number of players participating in a world (top left corner), the list of ships used, the number of players using that ship, the leader’s name and their best stats. The bottom bar shows your total tournament points (TP) scored and the KPIs for the world (Highest effective DPS, least items used, least time to finish map).

Captains Revamp

After countless months of piloting and grinding through rocks all around the universe, all 8 captains have expanded their skillset and even share a bit of their expertise with each other. Captains can master new talents through experience earned by destroying blocks.

Talents

Each captain now has 15 new talents relating to the captain’s theme, from surviving collisions, farming, increasing damage, improving ship agility, and others. Captain talents are organized into 5 tiers, with 3 talents in each tier. Players can pick a talent from each tier benefiting the task at hand.

There are two types of talents, active and passive. Active talents only provide their bonuses if they are selected and the captain is flying the ship, while passive talents always provide their bonuses if they are enabled. You can choose to enable or disable passive talents.

An active talent.
A passive talent. Passive talents are indicated with orange corner triangles.

Talents in each tier can be unlocked by first earning enough experience points (XP) to reach the tier, then pay a YS cost to unlock a particular talent. Once talents are unlocked, you can freely switch between them. XP is earned by flying your ships with a captain. The higher the rank of the captain, map tier, or wave distance, the more XP you will earn per block destroyed. The formula is:

XP per destroyed block = Minimum of Rank or (10% Mission, 10% World Tier, 1% Wave)

The exact talent values below are subject to balancing and might change!

Faction Update v2.0

The first glimps of darkness is dawning. It is time to choose sides.

Align yourselves with one of 3 new factions to access powerful faction ships and items. Complete new faction missions, explore a transformed world map, destroy mutated blocks, and earn reputations for your chosen faction. Be aware! Joining a faction demands true dedication to their cause and will initiate a complete MEMORY WIPE! You will abandon all your past deeds, ships, fortunes, and allies. However, your past efforts will not go unrewarded by the all-knowing leadership who work in the shadows. Being part of a faction grants you permanent access to their store, provided you have enough Rep points to spend. Acquiring these faction items is essential to surviving the ever treacherous deep space.

Temple of Hyperion

The Temple of Hyperion is an enigmatic sect that worships Hyperion, the titan of protection, in their temple ships of carbon and iron. The fires of their ship’s engines are always aflame, and their followers are constantly building and worshipping. To what end…no one knows, as new initiates to their cult are seldom heard from again.

They offer potent armaments that are highly effective against metallic asteroids, which are deviously plaguing deep space.

Armor Piercing

Converts 30% of direct damage into armor piercing damage. AP damage pierces armor.

Stacks multiplicatively. Armor piercing damage ignores armor.

Energy Siphon

Applies a debuff that reduces shield regen by 50% for 6 seconds.

Multiple items reduce shield regen multiplicatively.

Thermite Round

45% chance to add an additional 160% heat damage. Heat deals 3x damage to armor.

Heat damage deals 3x damage to armor.

Incendary

Applies a stacking 50% additional heat damage over 2 seconds per hit.

DOT damage stacks additively with every hit and refreshs the DOT duration.

Crystal Consortium

The Crystal Consortium holds the beacon to interstellar travel with their secret of harnessing Plasmite crystals for power. These crystals in liquid form are capable of powering capital ships for years, and decades of monopolizing the spacing industry have made them immensely rich. You can often see their ships working tirelessly in deep space.

They offer charged weapons that are highly effective against shielded crystal asteroids, which are insidiously draining global energy.

Shield Piercing

Converts 30% of direct damage into shield piercing damage. SP damage pierces shield.

Stacks multiplicatively. Shield piercing damage ignores shield.

Energy Disrupt

Applies a debuff that disrupts shield regen for 0.15 second.

Multiple items add disruption time.

Charged Round

45% chance to add an additional 160% energy damage. Energy deals 3x damage to shield.

Energy damage deals 3x damage to shield.

Protonic

Applies a stacking 50% additional energy damage over 2 seconds per hit.

DOT damage stacks additively with every hit and refreshs the DOT duration.

Void Legion

The Void Legion is a military research group that developed the V-agent, a biological nanite of planetary destruction. They are feared by many for their boundless powers and respected by others for their humanitarian research which eradicated genetic diseases. Due to their controversial nature, they are shunned by society and based in deep space.

They offer high-tech weapons that can counteract mutated void asteroids, which are unnaturally corrupting ordinary matter.

Void Resistance

Reduce the chance of losing a projectile modifier by 28% when damaging a void block.

Multiple items stack multiplicatively.

Double Piercing

Converts 15% of direct damage into pure damage. Pure damage pierces shield and armor.

Stacks multiplicatively. Pure damage deals unmitigated damage to health.

Void Inoculation

3% chance on hit to nullify a void block, but restores block health, armor, and shield to full.

Multiple items stack multiplicatively.

Plutonium Round

40% chance to deal an additional 125% radiation damage. Radiation slightly reduces armor rating.

Radiation damage reduce armor rating by a small amount. The amount of AR reduced scales with radiation damage value.

Shielded Blocks

Asteroids with crystal composites are indicated by the blue shield over them. Shields will constantly regenerate, and they have a value and a regeneration percentage. The area of the shield indicates the remaining shield value, and it takes at least one damage instance to destroy it. Only through overwhelming force or disrupting shield regeneration can you break through these blocks.

Joining Factions

Search for the faction outposts scattered around the world at different tiers. Upon joining a faction, you will lose all your current ships, currencies, items, and achievements, except previously unlocked factions, faction ships, faction reputation, medals, premium and special items. You will also lose half of your reputation with the other factions if you decide to switch to another! Choose wisely. Nevertheless, once you have unlocked a faction, you are always welcome to purchase their items, provided you have enough reputation left.

Faction ships are special. Once you have unlocked it, you can repurchase them with regular Money to help you accelerate your future runs.

Earn reputation for your current faction by completing faction missions, or trade-in your Yellow Squares (YS) or Red Crosses (RC) in the faction store.

The cracks of the universe are forming. An unknown galactic event has occurred in sector ND2, rippling deadly radiation that transformed all cold matter in deep space. Asteroid blocks, that were once freely exploited for resources and sport, appear to mutate into different forms. Are they fighting back? These asteroids are more resistant to conventional weapons, disrupting mining operations and interstellar transport, and straining the fine engines of galactic societies.

This is a call of duty to all free pilots out there! Ready your miner guns at all costs!

Armored Blocks

Asteroids with metallic composites are indicated by the ring of armor around them. Armor has a value and armor rating. The area of the ring indicates the remaining armor value, and the type of metal indicates armor rating (AR). AR reduces projectile damage from >0% to 100%, and it linearly decreases with the remaining armor value. Hence, a damaged armor is not quite effective at resisting damage.

The types of metal armor and their armor rating.

Carbon Armor

[>0 – 0.09 AR]

Adamantium Armor

[0.6 – 0.69 AR]

Tin Armor

[0.1 – 0.19 AR]

Orichalcum Armor

[0.7 – 0.79 AR]

Copper Armor

[0.2 – 0.29 AR]

Galaxium Armor

[0.8 – 0.89 AR]

Gold Armor

[0.3 – 0.39 AR]

Unicorium Armor

[0.9 – 0.99 AR]

Titanium Armor

[0.4 – 0.49 AR]

Unobtanium Armor

[1.0 AR]

Osmium Armor

[0.5 – 0.59 AR]

Mutated Blocks – Void

Mutated blocks have special properties and the type of mutation is indicated by the health texture. In this update, we introduce the void mutation, which randomly removes a projectile modifier among this pool: Pierce, Deathpierce, Circle AoE, Rectangle AoE, Debuff (Energy Siphon, Energy Disrupt), DOT (Incendary, Protonic). The number of modifiers removed is proportional to the block mutation level.

Damage Type and Evaluation

With the new faction items, we introduce 6 new damage types in addition to normal damage:

Pure – Deals unmitigated damage to health. In other words, this type of damage pierces through both shield and armor.
SP (shield piercing) – Damage pierces through shield.
AP (armor piercing) – Damage pierces through armor.
Energy – Does double damage to shield.
Heat – Does double damage to armor.
Radiation – Reduces armor rating.

A projectile can consist of any of these damage types, and each type applies one damage instance onto the block. Damage instances are applied in this order: Pure > SP > AP > Energy > Heat > Radiation > Normal.

Damage is always absorbed first by the Shield, then by the Armor, and finally applied to the Health, unless the damage type pierces through shield or armor, or both. Note that piercing damage does not apply the damage to the pierced shield or armor. Damage done to the armor is reduced by the armor rating (armorDamage = damage * AR), and damage done to health is reduced by the armor rating * remaining armor (healthDamage = armorDamage * armorValue / armorMax).
